Boons: above your utility bar, various boons show up. I’m going to describe the types of support characters provide because I think it is essential to understand when choosing a class and learning the game. In PvP, there is definitely a greater degree of control and support viability. Anet would like to call their meta control/support/damage, but in PVE, it is much more accurate that EVERYONE tries to DPS, while providing support.

Instead, every character focuses on providing as much damage as it can, while also providing a measure of support. There is no holy trinity (tank, heals, DPS). Good players learn every weapon and swap them regularly depending on the situation. A Guardian using a Staff has 5 different attacks than a Guardian wielding a Greatsword. Your action bar is determined by what weapon you use. You can even dodge big red circles that hit you, as long as you are mid-dodge. Positioning matters-you won’t get damaged by an attack who’s animation does not hit you, a projectile you outrun or dodge, or an attack you are behind. Note that you cannot dodge falling damage, conditions that are already on you, such as burning, and a few rare boss attacks. This is an essential skill, and even while leveling, various enemies have attacks you should be dodging. Every character has a dodge that makes you completely invulnerable to most damage. It also optionally adds a crosshair and some UI tweaks players may prefer. This will not get you banned, and will make the game play like an action game by moving your main attack to left click and dodge to right click, and enabling mouselook. If you prefer action RPG gameplay, please give immersive combat mode a try. It just doesn’t seem that way at first because there is no in-game way to use mouselook. Guild Wars 2 has action combat like Tera, Blade and Soul, etc. Displayed above your utility skills (the right side of your action bar)Ĭondition: a harmful effect applied above your utility traits, like being set on fire. Elite Specs are GW2's new sub-class system.īoon: synonym of buff, a positive effect applied to your character. Specializations or Specs: Part of a character's build, unlocked as you level up. Specifically, the meta is the overarching trends in what builds people use.īuild: A character's setup, including weapons, armor, trinkets, runes, sigils, specializations, traits, and techniques.

Meta: In general, the metagame is the thought process that goes into deciding how to play. You will learn more about them as you play the game, but knowing what they mean will be helpful for reading this guide. These are terms you might not be familiar with if GW2 is your first step into MMOs.

=Vocabulary Terms (Skip if you've played an MMO):= This guide is focused on PvE, as PvP is just too complicated for one person and one guide. To pick the class that you won’t end up enjoying, and that might turn you off from the game. There are so many choices, in fact, that it is possible to make the wrong choices for you. It can even be hard to figure out how to play. With 9 classes, and many different weapons for each class, all of which play differently, it can be hard to figure out what class is best for you. It is an insanely vast game with so many choices and options. Guild Wars 2 is an amazing game that I wholeheartedly recommend. I always like to read a ton before I start playing, whereas my wife likes to jump in blind and figure it our herself- which is fine too! Hello! I typed this up as something that can hopefully be linked to new players who like to make informed choices about their games.
